For better or worse, social media has become an integral part of our daily life. While it connects us, entertains us, and inform us, it also brings with it significant mental and political challenges. From algorithm-driven addiction to corporate control of our valuable data, the current state of social media is far from ideal. But there is a new player in the town that promises to fix these issues: the fediverse.

The fediverse is not just another social network; it’s a decentralized alternative that could reshape the way we interact online, giving us more control over our digital lives. In this article  I will try to explain how the fediverse works, why it’s needed, and how it addresses the growing concerns surrounding the mainstream social media.

Why mainstream social media is broken?

Many of us have love-hate relationship with platform like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. These platforms were originally created to connect people, but over time they evolved into profit-driven machines that prioritize engagement at any cost—often at the expense of our mental health and well-being.

These platforms use algorithms to keep us glued to our screens. They show us contents that maximizes engagement—often sensational, emotionally charged, or divisive posts—because it keeps us scrolling. This fosters echo chambers and encourages the spread of misinformation.
